SSAT Vocabulary – Easy Ways to Increase the Score on the SSAT by Strengthening Vocabulary Skills

If you want your child to do well on the SSAT, it is essential that they spend time working with, and improving their vocabulary skills. Two sections of the exam deal in part with the vocabulary, and this is an essential area to focus on.

The verbal section focuses on synonyms and analogies. As you can imagine, doing well on this section relies predominantly on vocabulary knowledge. The other section is reading comprehension, which involves reading passages and answering questions. Vocabulary is also essential to doing well in this section.

Fortunately, with some determination and focus, your child will be able to do better on this part of the exam. However, you must start exam preparations early. Cramming or memorizing are not the keys to success on the SSAT.

An easy way to increase your child’s vocabulary skills, is to make sure they are reading a wide range of material. They should be reading books, and other types of information, that are not only at their reading level, but even above. If they like reading a particular type of genre, such as adventure, try to get them some more material that is slightly advanced from what they already read and liked. Do not underestimate the power of on-going reading to greatly increase their vocabulary level in reading comprehension score.

It is also important that your child goes into the exam armed with specific strategies. For example, there are several strategies you can practice with your child that will help them in the vocabulary portions of the test. While they may not be able to preview the specific content, they can always increase their skills.

Many students, when looking at possible answers, will often panic if they don’t know what a word means. The best way to deal with this is to have your child practice using what they know. This means focusing on the word or parts of a word that they already familiar with.

This is a great way to rule out incorrect answers. The student knows one of the words is a potential answer, and if it does not fit into the question, they have already increased the chances of choosing the right answer.

Another way to apply this strategy is to have study and preparation in prefixes and suffixes. Once a student recognizes some of the common ones, even if they don’t know the root word, they will be able to select or exclude the some of the answer choices.

While taking the SSAT can be overwhelming, there are a number of practical tips that can easily improve your child’s score. The key is to start ahead of time. Using an online preparation service will give you even greater assistance. Consider online test preparation resources for even more success.

5 Ways to Improve Your Sales Copy

The sales copy you produce when marketing on the internet has a significant influence over the ultimate success of your online efforts. People are actually more influenced by copy writing then they are by the product itself when making buying decisions. However good copy writing skills CAN be acquired and are absolutely necessary if you want to improve your marketing effectiveness online.

Let’s have a quick look at 5 ways in which you can learn how to write persuasive copy to help you increase your sales when marketing on the internet.

Place Your Focus on the Reader

Remember you are speaking to the reader and their only focus is ‘what is in it for them.’

Avoid focusing any part of your copy writing on your own accomplishments since the reader is not interested. Their only concern is how they will benefit or how what you are offering will make their lives more enjoyable or easier.

This should be the ONLY focus of your writing and will get you the greatest results.

Hard Hitting Headlines

Always try to use headlines that will capture the attention of the reader. Be descriptive and do not be afraid to use shock or humor since this normally serves to further engage readers thereby encouraging them to read further on into the content of your copy.

Use Bullet Points

Using bullet points makes it easier for any reader to follow and it also makes it easier to go back and reference the copy later on.

Another benefit of using this type format is that it does not ‘congest’ the page with a lot of words which results in less eye strain.

Leave Your Vocabulary at the Door

Having a large vocabulary is something to be proud of and both your mom and English teacher would approve. On the other hand your reader is less likely to be impressed and more likely to NOT understand what it is you are trying to say to them.

Learn to write in a clear, concise and simple to read manner that EVERYONE will be able to understand.

Bold and Descriptive Sub-Headlines

Much like regular headlines your ‘sub-heads’ should capture attention and also be descriptive. Let the reader know what the section is all about and why they should read it.

Similar to using bullet points having sub-head lines in your copy tends to ‘break up’ the body of your content. This makes your copy seems less ‘imposing’ to any reader upon first glance.

Learning to write good sales copy is possible and necessary in order to increase your marketing effectiveness online. People base their buying decisions more upon the copy writing they are exposed to as opposed to the product itself. By focusing on the 5 areas we spoke of above you can easily learn how to write persuasive copy that will help boost your online sales and marketing efforts.

Five Ways To Type Faster In Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has many features designed to speed up the process of creating documents. Learn a few of these easy features, and you’ll be typing your work in a fraction of the time.

1. AutoText

Have you ever noticed that when you start to type a day of the week, a little label appears that has the day you were typing followed by (Press ENTER to Insert)? This is an example of AutoText, a list of commonly-typed words and phrases that Word will complete for you if you press Enter. Watch for these labels to appear and when they do, press Enter to let Word finish typing for you.

2. Re-use similar documents

If you’re typing a document that is very similar to one you have already typed, you can make a copy of the original and use the Find and Replace feature in Word to quickly make the necessary changes.

Make a new copy of the document you want to reuse by clicking on File, Save As, and giving it a different name. If you need to replace, say, every occurrence of the name “Smyth” with “Lynch”, click on Edit in the Menu Bar and click on Replace.

In the Find and Replace window that appears, type Smyth in the Find what: box, type Lynch into the Replace with: box, and click on Find Next. Word will highlight the next occurrence of Smyth. If the highlighted occurrence of Smyth is one that you want to replace with Lynch, click on Replace, and Word will replace Smyth with Lynch and automatically highlight the next occurrence of Smyth. If you do not want to replace the occurrence of Smyth with Lynch, click Find Next and it will simply highlight the next occurrence of Smyth without making any changes. If you feel brave enough, go ahead and click Replace All: this will replace all occurrences of Smyth with Lynch without checking with you first. But be careful: if you have, say, the word Smythfield in your document, it will now say Lynchfield, without your being aware of it!

3. Make a template

Once you have typed and formatted a document that you will use over and over again with few changes, turn it into a template. Delete any text that will change every time you use the document, and click on File in the Menu Bar, click on Save As. In the File name: box type in the name you want to give to your template, and in the Save As Type: box just below the name, click on the dropdown list and select Document Template. You can now close your file. To find and use the template, click on File in the Menu Bar, click on New. On the right side of the screen, click on On my computer. The Templates window will appear, and your template will be displayed.

4. Better yet, use one of Word’s ready-made templates

If you click on File, then click on New, you will be able to choose from the templates already stored on your computer (by clicking on On my computer), or from the hundreds available at the Microsoft website by clicking on Templates on Office Online.

5. Create some shortcuts to automatically turn into blocks of text that you often use

You can, for example, create shortcuts for your company name; for your signature block; for the typical opening and closing sentences of emails or letters that you often send. To create the shortcut, first type and format the text exactly as you want it to look. Select the text, click on Tools in the Menu Bar, and click on Autocorrect Options. The Autocorrect window will appear. In the Replace: box, type in the shortcut you want to use (I suggest you always begin a shortcut with the forward slash /). Click the Add button; click the OK button. To use the shortcut, type it in and press Enter.

Ways To Entice Children To Read More Books

Kids have the perfect mindset to get lost in the joy of a good book. Books for kids are ultimately the inspiration for healthy imaginative play, long term reading skills, and even the springboard for theoretical conversation at the dinner table. While kids are often on the go and don’t take the time to slow down for a good read, introducing your kids to the joy of reading a good book isn’t as insurmountable as it seems. A little creativity on the parent’s behalf, and you will have a budding reader reluctantly putting their book down to move onto life’s other demands.

Books for kids help to develop their already active imaginations. There really is no such thing as an unimaginative child, just kids with varying imaginative qualities. While one child might be able to imagine underwater cities and create friends from thin air, other children might be conjuring up the next Windows application or mentally developing the technology to hook up 12 gaming systems to a single television without ever unplugging a system again. Developing your child’s unique imagination through books starts with what they are already showing you on a daily basis.

The reasonable argument for enticing kids to read books that are outside of their element includes expanding their horizons. Of course, over time, that’s a fabulous idea. For the immediate enticement stage, it is more likely to be a successful venture if kids are reading books that interest them from the title to the back cover. Let them choose their own books. Nearly all American children’s presses are highly selective about child and young adult reading material. Children who read age appropriate books are not likely to run into objectionable material. However, parents can usually read a thick young adult book in a few hours if there is any concern relating to material.

For the obstinate television watching child, a family reading hour is a great way to entice your children to read books. Start small. Give the entire family a half an hour to read their book and then twenty minutes or so to talk about what they are reading. Chances are, by the end of the first week, the kids will be requesting a few more minutes to finish their chapter or will even take the book into their bedroom to continue after family reading hour has concluded. Younger children will benefit from being read to from books for kids.

Books for kids that stay within their vocabulary limits (with a few challenges for good measure) are more likely to hold their attention than books written on an adult level with language that is too hard for children to grasp. An over achiever may want to break out Shakespeare at the age of eight, but they are not likely to get much out of it, even if they won’t admit it. If children are being read to, it is acceptable to bump up the language a notch or two, as children can often hear the language used and understand it much faster than if they are trying to read it and comprehend it.

Finding books for kids that they will love and you will enjoy having them read can be easily done online. Bookstores are great for titles that are unknown and new authors. Online bookstores often carry out of print books, significantly reduced books, and books that are a little “out of the way” and unique for the hard to please child. Online book selections are easier for parents to determine than for kids. Often kids need more than a page of text to know whether they think the book is perfect or not. Encouraging them to read a series of books for kids can keep them reading for a long time, and then the habit will be well established and moving onto the next title is simple.

Books for kids have a lot of competition these days. Television with 24 hour a day, 7 days a week cartoon and specialized children’s programming, computer games, video games, gadgets that fit in their pocket, DVD players in the car, and there’s probably a few kids out there with electronic gizmos on their bikes are all competing for a kid’s attention. Turning them into an avid books for kids lover takes a little disciplined creativity at first. Rules about the electronic gadgets and gizmos can help establish reading time and story time before bed (what kid doesn’t want to delay bedtime?) can help offset the chronic competition that books for kids face. Parents who love to read are more likely to have kids who love to read. Parents who can at the very least appreciate the books for kids and delve into a book for an hour a day can teach their children to love books. Parents who read to their kids help establish a great vocabulary, better communication skills, and have a marvelous and special bond centered around some very special books for kids.

Ten Ways Twitter Can Make You a Better Writer

Evaluate yourself as a writer. Who are you? What topics interest you? What do you want to express – in this tweet and over time?  If you haven’t asked yourself such questions starting out, you’ll come to them before long.
Make style reflect content. What writing style comes naturally to you — informational, snarky, amusing, inspirational? What style best suits your writing aims? Do they match?
Evaluate your audience/readership. While a few writers only want the joy of self-expression, most want readers too. Microblogging is a crash course in reaching out.
Be concise. A fundamental of good writing.
Weigh the words. You’re told how many characters you’ve used, when you’ve gone over the limit and by how much. In working out which words to remove/alter to make your message fit, you get a writing tutorial.
Get clear. No room for faff and imprecision.
Choose strong verbs and nouns. No room for unnecessary adverbs and adjectives either.
Stretch vocabulary. You’ll need to dig deep into your vocabulary to find the bestest, shortest word.
Respond appropriately to feedback. On Twitter and other microblogging sites, the feedback loop is instant and unforgiving. If you’re not making sense or adding value, you don’t get retweeted or followed.
Play with the words. Have fun with it. What words will inspire people to follow you, take an action you’d like them to take, click on your link, retweet your tweet?  Microblogging works best for writers who treat it as a word game – like a crossword or Scrabble.
