How to Get Into Medicine at University in the UK

We all know that it is very tough to get a place at university in the UK to study medicine. Why? Because competition is very very high. Now that isn’t something that stopped me and it should not stop you. I am now going to study medicine at Peninsula in fact! Took a few attempts but I got there.

Anyway stories aside. Here is 6 top tips! (Not in any order)

1. Pick universities wisely. You can pick one university you want to go to but don’t be silly and pick all 4 choices solely on where you want to go. I suggest 3 strategical choices and 1 as to where you really want to go.

2. Nail the UKCAT. People say it’s useless but I can’t stress how much medical schools use it! Some purely pick you based on what your UKCAT score was! Ahem Manchester and few others. Some use cut off scores.

3. Get plenty of work experience. You must have medical work experience and some non medical work experience. Speak to your GP, you local hospital and if you struggle any family friends or relatives who are medical professionals.

4. If you take a gap year while reapplying to study medicine because you failed first time, DO NOT give up. The best thing you can do is become a Health care assistant!!! Great work experience and gives you plenty to talk about in an interview.

5. If you fail to get the necessary grades then you can either do a different degree or resit your exams in a gap year. I had this very dilemma and I think you should definitely resit your exams instead of just picking any other degree and trying to get into medicine after graduating. Not only will it help you go to a better university to do the other course but it will help when you come to apply afterwards!

6. Most importantly. NEVER GIVE UP! I failed my A level, got rejected from all 4 universities twice and then finally when I had my AAAB and 670 UKCAT in my hand I got 2 interviews and 2 offers! 3rd time lucky for me. I just wasn’t meant to get in before. I know people who got these grades first time round but gave up and went to university to study another course who I feel like would have definitely got in IF they tried again.

Learning a foreign language can seem a daunting challenge, but using efficient and logical methods it can be made a lot easier. Having spent a year in Switzerland, I’ve discovered a few things about language learning that may be of use. The internet is littered with websites claiming to teach you the language within ridiculously short periods of time. However I’ve generally found there aren’t many shortcuts to be had. I found it extremely useful to first learn the basic grammar points. Although this may not sound like much fun, it doesn’t take too long, and it enables you to have a very solid template to which apply the language, and in the long term will actually save you time. For example, I studied the German language, when it comes to verbs there are perhaps 4 or 5 variations of the infinitive form, depending on the subject (I, You informal and formal, We). However the changes that are applied to the end of the verb are consistent with each and every verb, (par a few strong verb exceptions). Once you’ve learnt these changes then additional learning only requires you to memorise one word, which you can then adapt yourself.

I also think its important to practice what you have learnt, although this is not always that easy if your not residing in a the same country as the language you are learning, there are a few other ways. There is the possibility of creating a pen pal relationship, through the internet. There are thousands of people around the world wishing to learn English, so finding someone in the country of your chosen foreign language shouldn’t be too hard.

For those of you not residing in your chosen language country a good method for increasing your knowledge of the language and keeping your skills active are by learning and practicing a new word each day. Simply reminding yourself a few times a day and practising in pretend situations should help keep your skills intone for when you get to next visit the country!

A-level courses and University preparation at private Colleges of further education

Private colleges of further education usually offer a comprehensive choice of sixth form/A-level courses, in order to prepare their students for all types of studies at university level that they may wish to pursue. Independent colleges also provide extensive support and advice regarding university applications, including specialist advice to achieve admission to top UK universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Sixth form/A-level courses are primarily for students between 16 and 18 years of age. Students are required to take three or four A-level subjects. Independent colleges of further education usually accept AS transfers from other colleges for students who wish to complete their sixth-form studies at a different institution.

A-level courses offered by private colleges may range from two years to 18 months or one-year courses. Prestigious independent colleges of further education usually have high expertise when it comes to advising applicants to top UK universities. They are also well qualified to provide support to A-level students who wish to apply for a place at a Medical School.

In the second year of A-level courses (A2 year) the main focus of tutors shifts from monitoring the students’ academic progress to guiding them through their university application. Preparation to university admission usually includes detailed advice to sixth-form students regarding which university to apply at and which specific courses to take.
